Honeywell Collaborates with Fruit Farmer Moleda to Sustainably Grow Produce

Honeywell ControlEdge PCD provides moisture controls for sterilizing plants and agricultural equipment.

Aug. 3, 2023 - Honeywell announced it is supplying Moleda with its ControlEdge PCD technology to support temperature and moisture control processes for sterilizing plants and equipment in the agriculture sector. Honeywell’s process controls enable Moleda to offer a pesticide-free solution for growing plants for consumption. Based in Sylling, Norway, Moleda uses steam to sterilize plants and equipment through a precise controlled temperature cycle. Their innovative offering, Plantsauna, aims to disinfect plants without pesticides, aligning with local and global regulations, helping plants grow faster with fruit more evenly distributed. “Honeywell’s ControlEdge PCD technology helps to elevate our Plantsauna offering to ensure we can provide the world with pesticide-free, sustainable food,” said Sander Myhrene, Moleda CEO. Before going in the ground, plants are placed in a chamber that is custom built with carefully controlled temperature and moisture levels, designed to kill pests, diseases and fungi without harming the plant or introducing pesticides. Honeywell ControlEdge enables Moleda to reliably control the chamber conditions for growing strawberries.“Honeywell has a long-standing history of delivering reliable, efficient process control instrumentation to several industries, and the agricultural sector is no different,” said Srikumar Srinivasan, vice president and general manager of Process Measurement and Control at Honeywell Process Solutions. “Our team worked closely with Moleda to identify the ideal Honeywell solution that would help improve its pesticide-free heat treatment solution for growing plants for the world to enjoy.” Honeywell’s ControlEdge PCD is a new generation programable logic controller (PLC) with modular IO that delivers integrated communication efforts and enhanced cybersecurity. The platform allows Moleda to record, monitor, archive and manage temperature and moisture data through mobile systems. With scalable design, compact form factor and fast execution time, it enables Moleda to produce high quality products.
